What is the difference between the computer-based and paper-based IELTS exams?

Both Computer-Delivered IELTS and Paper-Based IELTS test the same skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and are equally accepted by universities, employers, and immigration authorities. The difference lies only in how you take the test.

Computer-Delivered IELTS:

  1. Format: Listening, Reading, and Writing are done on a computer; Speaking remains face-to-face.
  2. Results: Available faster — usually within 5–7 days.
  3. Availability: More test dates and flexible scheduling.
  4. Advantages: Easier editing and faster typing for those comfortable with computers.

Paper-Based IELTS:

  1. Format: All sections except Speaking are completed on paper.
  2. Results: Released about 13 days after the test.
  3. Availability: Test dates may be less frequent.
  4. Advantages: Ideal if you prefer handwriting or find paper tests more comfortable.

Which should you choose?
Select the format you feel most confident with — if you type quickly and like digital convenience, choose the computer test. If you prefer handwriting and planning on paper, the paper test might suit you better.
