How long do I need to study English for?

The duration of your English studies depends on your starting level, your target level, and the number of hours you can dedicate to studying. At Speak English Institute, our courses align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a globally recognised standard for measuring language proficiency.

CEFR Levels and Study Time

The CEFR outlines six levels of English proficiency, and the approximate time required to progress through each level is as follows:

A1 (Beginner): 100–150 hours to reach A2 (Elementary).
A2 (Elementary): 180–200 hours to reach B1 (Intermediate).
B1 (Intermediate): 200–250 hours to reach B2 (Upper-Intermediate).
B2 (Upper-Intermediate): 200–250 hours to reach C1 (Advanced).
C1 (Advanced): 250–300 hours to reach C2 (Proficient).

Course Options at Speak English Institute

Intensive General English: Study 20 hours per week, achieving approximately one level in 10–12 weeks.
Semi-Intensive English: Study 10 hours per week, progressing one level in around 20 weeks.
Private Lessons: Flexible and customised to accelerate learning for specific goals.

Assessment and Progress

Every student takes a placement test before starting their course to identify their CEFR level. Our expert teachers will monitor your progress to ensure you are developing the skills needed to advance to the next level effectively.

No matter your starting point, Speak English Institute provides the guidance and support you need to achieve your English language goals efficiently and confidently.
